No "God" in Congressional Flag Certificates; House Passes Historic Ramadan Resolution

This photo was taken on September 11, 2002. No word on whether it violates the establishment clause.

Americans love the American flag. Most do, anyway. If you wanted, you could get a flag that was flown over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Congress sends out these certificates with each flag, saying "Hey, this flag really was flown over the Capitol. No kidding."

I'm paraphrasing, but that's the jist of it. You can also add a message to the certificate. Paul Larochelle ordered a flag to give it to his Army veteran grandfather. He wanted the certificate to say, "This flag was flown in honor of Marcel Larochelle, my grandfather, for his dedication and love of God, country and family."

Not so fast, son. You can't have it. "God" is not allowed. One of the 14 rules the Flag Office Services has is "... religious expressions are not permitted on flag certificates."

The rule says that you cannot request the wod "God" to be put on a certificate that you order and pay for. I can only guess that is to separate the church from the State. Because nothing says "establishment of religion" like ordering a certificate and having the word "God" printed on it. That would be oppressive.

Now consider this:

A resolution recognizing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and expressing the "deepest respect to Muslims in the United States and throughout the world" was adopted in the U.S. House of Representatives October 2 by a vote of 376-0.

Congress refuses to print a certificate to recognize a veteran's love of God, but they will pass a resolution telling us how great Islam is to America. Courtesy of your Nancy Pelosi Congress, the most ethical in history.

God bless.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

It would appear to be an act of surrender rather than confronting an unreformed faith that brokes no disagreement in the larger world. More words of tolerance from Islam are in order.
