Peering Through A Glass Half-Full, Darkly

advertisement

What a relief to read in a new Pew Research Center study that Muslims in America are "largely assimilated, happy with their lives, and moderate with respect to many of the issues that have divided Muslims and Westerners around the world."Phew. Praise Allah. No more worries. On the other hand, the study's findings may depend on how you define "largely." Here's another way of putting the Pew results: While a majority of older U.S. Muslims have largely assimilated, more than a few younger Muslims think suicide bombings are justified.

Having trouble remembering where you put those pompoms? Stick around.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

If you asked all Americans and not just muslims:

Some people think that bombing and other types of attacks intentionally aimed at civilians are sometimes justified while others think that this kind of violence is never justified. Do you personally feel that such attacks are... justified.

Often? Sometimes? Rarely? Never?

Considering this poll about muslims which asked a similar question, would you expect more or fewer Amerians to support intentional attacks against civilians?

How about if Iranians were asked the same question?

Would you see the results as "darkly" as you view muslims?
